First off, it is obvious, from reading this book, that the author is a devoted fan of Bob Dylan. The detail in which he analyzes Dylan’s songs and albums is comprehensive and detailed, and for that, I am in awe. I am a Dylan fan, but maybe more of an admirer (I only own 1 album, “Highway 61 Revisited”).That being said, the book was filled with a lot of music theory, of which I will admit I am unfamiliar. I learned guitar mainly on my own, and talking about music theory is something that unfortunately makes my eyes glaze over. For those chapters, I found myself on Wikipedia for some of the terms, and skimming over most of them. The author did a deep dive into some Dylan deep tracks, and I found myself searching and listening to those songs so I could better understand the references. This endeavor did endear me to some new (to me) Dylan songs that I found pleasurable.I did think, at times, of how the famously irascible and curmudgeonly Bob Dylan would respond to reading this book. I suppose he would slough it off, which might be considered a badge of honor, haha.If you are a big Bob Dylan fan, with an affinity towards the conjunction of songwriting with music theory, you’ll like the book. If you’re like me, who recognizes Bob Dylan’s genius and appreciates his body of work over the past 60 years, you may not, but I do appreciate and applaud the work put into this book.
